Audio adverts, a curse or a boon?
As of noon today EST at least one major supplier of audio advertising goes live across the globe. We are all familiar with the pay per click ads made famous by Google and others, but you have one significant choice with these ads which will be denied by audio advertising. That is, you have a choice whether to click or not. Of course the ppc ads are targeted to the theme of the site or blog and therefore in theory more tempting, but a viewer still has the ultimate sanction to choose not to click! With audio ads, if you click on a site or blog which has had the correct snippet of code installed, an audio ad will burst from your pc speakers just when you're not expecting it. Disconcerting if you're already listening to something, as many people do, such as background muzak or a podcast. You won't know it's there till too late. Personally I don't have the speakers on when I'm surfing because so many sites have videos or awful background music: on MySpace you get some teen's frenzied howling passed off as his latest Grammy-winning masterpiece. But therein lies a problem for the people who are paying for these advertisements. How do you guarantee an audience when there are so many 'off' switches on the speakers? Vendors of these ads have no doubt done there homework that there are tens of millions of sites and tens of millions of people surfing at any one time in a global frenzy of site-seeing, so at least some of these intrusions will get through in an attempt to part us from our hard-earned cash. Whether they will represent good value for the advertiser remains to be seen (or heard?) Coming soon, to a set of speakers near you. I for one will forego the pleasure and leave the speakers off till I choose to put the Boss's latest cd in the player.
