Home Composting
We installed a large compost bin in a corner of the garden last summer and the amount of household waste that has to be collected by the local council has reduced considerably, plus we have a good supply of high quality compost for the garden and pots this coming Spring. I wanted to add old shredded paper (identity theft precautions!) but was worried about the chemical composition of the print ink building up a harmful accumulation in the new soil. However, upon researching I found out that the Centre for Alternative Technolgy ran a series of field trials showing that compost made from newsprint had no effect on the growth of plants. Whlst in the past some inks were metal- based, vegetable-based inks are now the norm so these bidegrade safely in the compost bin. Did you know? You can also add crushed egg shells and mussel shells to your compost. They won't break down any further but they will add valuable minerals such as calcium. Also, when peeling vegetables in the kitchen, wrap the scraps in newspaper before adding them to the compost bin. The paper will be a good 'brown' balance for the 'green' peelings and it is also a good way of controlling the number of fruit flies you may get in your bin. Happy composting!
