Social Networking

A while ago I was making websites for a few people I knew in the music industry.
One was a band from Ukraine called Fotomoto. At the time it was easier for me in the West with my free webspace etc., to do it for them and we had a lot of success in getting the band to UK to perform for the legendary John Peel on the BBC.
I also looked after webspace for my brother's band Peakz and helped get an American outfit called Juanita Family and Friends to UK for a session with BBC.
Then along came MySpace!
Myspace - now everyone can do it themselves and who needs a webmaster?
Then we get Facebook - ok, I'm ready to surrender.
I got a page on MySpace and joined lots of 'friends'. Did it do me any good? Well, a few more contacts maybe but the bands were now merrily selling for themselves with their PayPal 'buy now' buttons and so forth.
Me, bitter, whatever gives you that impression? I had a great time and learned a lot.
Now there's a new breed of social websites like Yuwie and Zubby and one or two others.
They have turned the model on its head by offering to share the advertising revenue with the members. Yes, you heard me!
MySpace of course as paret of a multi-media empire keeps all that lovely money, millions of dollars a month to itself, but the interest is generated by the users.
My favourite is Yuwie which uses the dreaded 'mlm' word which to many folks on the internet is akin to foul blaspheming.
If you get page views, you share the revenue generated. If you invite people to join under you (and why wouldn't your real friends want to?) you get a proportion of their revenue down to 10 levels deep.
That can be quite a powerful earner if you have the patience to sit it out for six months or so like a spider at the centre of your little web (pun definitely intended!)
or more correctly at the point of your pyramid.
